A client filed an ITR showing a ₹59,000 refund through an online DIY portal. But when our CA reviewed it, we found online gaming winnings that were never reported while claiming full TDS credits.

A client recently approached us with what seemed like great news: he had filed his Income Tax Return through an online DIY platform, and the portal displayed a refund of approximately ₹59,000. He believed that excess tax had been deducted and that the government would soon refund the amount directly to his bank account.

However, when our Chartered Accountants reviewed his return in detail, we discovered that the refund was misleading. A major portion of the client’s income had come from online gaming winnings (Dream11 / Sporta Technologies). The platform had deducted tax on those winnings, reflected in Form 26AS. But during filing, the client had claimed the ₹59,813 TDS credit while failing to declare the underlying ₹1,99,378 gaming income, reporting only ₹810 as total income.

Under Section 115BBJ and Rule 37BA, TDS credit is not free money—the matching income must be reported and taxed at a flat 30% plus cess. We recalculated his liability and filed a revised return under Section 139(5) before scrutiny notices or Section 270A penalties were issued.

Many small business owners and digital creators put off GST registration because of common myths: fearing compliance burdens, high costs, or assuming it is only needed once turnover hits ₹40 lakh. However, delaying registration can cost thousands in lost Input Tax Credit (ITC) and prevent participation in e-commerce or B2B contracts.

This comprehensive guide breaks down the true turnover thresholds for goods versus services, mandatory triggers like interstate supplies, and why voluntary registration often provides massive competitive advantages.
