FAQ about TDS Return Filing

TDS deducted in any month must be deposited to the credit of the Central Government by the 7th day of the following month. For the month of March, the due date is extended to the 30th of April.
What are the quarterly TDS return filing due dates?
The due dates for filing quarterly TDS returns (Form 24Q, 26Q, 27Q) are: Q1 (Apr-Jun) - 31st July; Q2 (Jul-Sep) - 31st October; Q3 (Oct-Dec) - 31st January; Q4 (Jan-Mar) - 31st May.
What is the difference between Form 24Q, 26Q, and 27Q?
Form 24Q is used for quarterly reporting of TDS on salary payments (u/s 192). Form 26Q is for quarterly TDS on non-salary payments made to residents (e.g., professional fees, rent, contracts). Form 27Q is for quarterly TDS on payments made to non-residents (NRIs) or foreign entities.
What is the penalty for late filing of TDS returns?
Under Section 234E, a late filing fee of ₹200 per day is charged for the period of delay, capped at the total amount of TDS deductible in that quarter. Additionally, a penalty under Section 271H ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹1,00,000 may be levied by the assessing officer.
Is TAN mandatory for filing Form 26QB on property purchase?
No, TAN is not required for Form 26QB (TDS on sale of property). Individual buyers can complete Form 26QB using the PAN of the buyer and seller, provided the property purchase value is ₹50 Lakh or higher.
Can a filed TDS return be revised to correct errors?
Yes, you can file a revised correction TDS statement to fix PAN errors, challan mismatches, interest calculations, or missing deductee entries using a consolidated statement from the TRACES portal.
What is the interest rate for late deduction vs late deposit of TDS?
If you fail to deduct tax at source, interest is charged at 1% per month from the date on which tax was deductible to the date of deduction. If you deduct tax but fail to deposit it on time, interest is 1.5% per month from the date of deduction to the actual date of deposit.
